How Shawn Jones Built The Biggest Car Community While Going Broke, Breaking Two Leases And Having No Inventory



We had to the Opportunity to have a conversation with Shawn Jones, Founder of Gentlemen’s Driving Club and got to learn about his amazing journey. Have a look at this conversation below.

Q1 Who is Shawn Jones in real life?

Shawn Jones is an entrepreneur, foodie, sports lover, and intellectual. When I am not dreaming up new ideas for my brand I am watching or playing sports, attending car shows and events, reading, trying out a new recipe or restaurant, and spending time with family.  I think its important to work hard but you also need to form other hobbies and interests to make your life complete. 

Q2 What is the Gentlemen’s Driving Club?

Gentlemen’s Driving Club is an apparel and media company. GDC represents the true gentlemen, the ultimate car enthusiast, and those that want apparel to truly symbolize their vehicle. We create apparel that makes you ready wherever your vehicle may take you. We are the only driving club striving to match the quality of our apparel to the quality of your car no matter what you may drive. Gentlemen’s Driving Club describes the feeling you get when driving the vehicle you love. Our apparel embodies the passion one feels while going 100 mph or cruising down the highway and thinking about nothing more than the wind in your hair and the roar of the exhaust. Q3 What all problems did you face in your career?

I think I faced all the same problems must brands do; building an audience, gaining trust, and making a name for ourselves. People always ask me how I was able to do those things so fast and the answer is simple. Hard work and clear direction. I am from Houston, TX and here construction workers are constantly building homes. What I noticed however is that some projects were completed extremely fast and efficiently and others much slower than expected. The reason is because the successful builders worked hard and had clear direction on what the final goal was. Building a brand is like building a house. Each action you take is equivalent to adding another brick to the foundation. Every item you ship, every customer you speak with, every social media post you make, etc  Assuming no storms arrive at some point you will have built a brand name. I am 25 years old and despite my brands success I know I am not where I want to be yet so I continue to lay bricks knowing that each one gets me closer to “my house” being built. 

Q4 What circumstances made you Pivot from your original idea?

We started as an apparel company for car enthusiasts who wanted to dress more stylish and gentlemanly than what was currently on the market. Since our humble beginnings just under two years ago our apparel is worn in 9 different countries and worn by over 4,000 drivers!!! So with so much success why switch up and create an online community? Our drivers started to ask the question whats next?” The GDC online Cars and Coffee Club is a place where car enthusiasts can go to talk shop, show off their rides, get repair and modding advice, buy,sell, and trade parts with other members, get free exposure for your builds, and receive free stickers! I knew that in order to survive we needed to create a more interactive experience. 

Q5. What were those defining moments in your career that gave you a sense of accomplishment?

The moment I knew I had started something big was when someone who knew absolutely nothing about us purchased our apparel after simply reading our story. That to me was very powerful, the fact that an idea and a story could influence someones buying decision so strongly. Another defining moment was when we started receiving orders from all around the world. We have shipped to Australia, Russia, Finland, Canada, The Netherlands, and every state in the US. To me a first time business owner from Houston, Tx to do international business in his first year blew my mind but the icing on the cake was matching my job income in the first 12 months of starting the brand. When you can do that it gives you a certain type of swagger. 

Q6 What would you say to your younger self?

If I could go back and tell my younger self one thing it would be to get a financial education early and make for certain that you always have working capital.

Today we sat down with Luke Cervino, founder of A1A Media. Luke has networked with some of the biggest A-List athletes in the industry like Ex NBA Champion Kendrick Perkins and how he started out with his career. Have a look at this conversation we had!

1. Who is Luke Cervino in real life?

Luke Cervino is the Founder of A1A Media. A digital/sports marketing agency. I grew up in New Jersey. Lived in South Florida for the past two years. Now back in New Jersey. I grew up playing basketball and football. I went on to play basketball in college at William Paterson University. I have been in the sports marketing industry for 5 years now. I was introduced to Kendrick Perkins through Kevin Garnett. Kendrick and I have been working together for the last 5 years. Kendrick is a client but I consider him family. A brother to me. I am 27 years old. Just turned 27 on September 2nd. Some of my hobbies include playing basketball, exercising, reading, collecting sports cards. I am the Founder of A1A Media. I am Kendrick Perkins Marketing Agent/Business Manager. Kendrick Perkins played 14 years in the NBA. Where he won an NBA Championship in 2008 with the Boston Celtics. For Kendrick, we work together on Endorsement deals, Social media Accounts, Marketing, Business, and Brand Opportunities. At A1A Media we provide services such as Athlete/Influencer Campaigns, creating content,  Driving traffic and ad campaigns, Marketing, and PR, and also Social Media/Instagram Growth. My Network is really important and I have a very big and powerful network.

2. Why did you decide to start a1a Media?

I have a vision at a young age to work with professional athletes and celebrities. I knew my very strong network would give me the opportunity to. So providing value has always been important to me to provided to my clients and myself. Marketing and networking is what I am very good at.

3. What are the key factors separating you from other media marketers?

I can get your product/brand into the handles of the best athletes in the world. Create creative content. I can get your product into the best athletes in the world. I provide an outlet for brands/businesses to put their trust into me, we work together on the brand’s vision and then create content with athletes and influencers who fit the brand. Then we market the content and drive sales for the brand. PR services. Having your article rank on google well. Growing your Instagram account organic. 

4. What problems did you face during your journey? (Luke Cervino)

Some obstacles managing inbound leads and prioritizing the leads. Organization and creating a pattern and routine system is some advice I love to give. Find the best and most efficient system that works for you and stick to it. Consistent is key. Expanding my business bringing on more clients but still staying efficient in my work. 

5. You have worked with A-List athletes like Kendrick Perkins, what would you say is your key takeaway from working with such big names?

Just be yourself. Be consistent. Find your passion and go attack your dreams. “Create a vision and never let the environment, other people’s beliefs, or the limits of what has been done in the past shape your decisions” Tony Robbins. Experience… Try and Try and Try again. Track your success and failures. Research education yourself. Most importantly NETWORK. Network with good people and bring value to the table. Just be yourself. Don’t try to impress anyone or be someone you’re not. Work extremely hard. “A real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided” Tony Robbins

Ayush Sabat On Why Hard Work With A Smart Approach Is The Need Of The Hour

1. Who is Ayush Sabat in Real Life?

Not very sure how to go about this but I am a 25-year-old person, who is into multiple things, still seeking the best among those for the future. So you can put me in the categories of producer, influencer & an entrepreneur. Right now it’s something like a jack of all trades and which I feel is fine. Certainly, it’s all about time management and balancing things. Thus, figuring out the best for me. I love helping people because I like doing it.

2. Why did you decide to start your career in the film industry?

Always had a fascination towards live events, music, and movies. In the year 2012, with few friends, I had organized a rock concert in the city, from then there was no looking back. As the years passed on, it was more of doing things professionally. Over the years, I had developed quite a few skills in event management, music videos overall management, direction, marketing, PR, and strategic planning.

3. What problems did you face in your career?

There are hurdles time and again but it’s important to face it and overcome it. I was a sluggish, under-confident person but eventually tried balancing it for betterment. A person faces many difficulties but one must keep hustling and aim for the goals.

4. What was that one moment in your career that gave you a sense of accomplishment?

Last year when I (Ayush Sabat) got the opportunity to be a part of an International music video by Krewella and Nucleya. It was an amazing experience working with such biggies like the Krewella sisters, Karl Daniel Malikyar (MGX Creative founder and creative director for Marshmello). There I found that my skill is worthy of handling a big project 

5. What would you say to someone who is just starting out?

What would you say to someone who is just starting out? I feel building good rapport and credibility is a very important investment in yourself, never stop learning new things, hard work with a smart approach is need of the hour for the day. Staying fit, confident, and updated is essential be it for any domain.

6. Which were some of the biggest events you were involved with?

Coming to biggest events its been quite a few. From where it all started (2012), the Rock concert which I had organized in the city is of course one of the highlights. ‘2016’, ‘2017’ my college fest ‘Riviera’, during Kumbh Mela (2019), 150 drone swarm show for a movie where I was involved for permission purpose from the administration, police, DGFT department.  

7. Is there something you would like to say to our readers?

I think supporting each other is very important be it a morally, emotionally, or business point of view. What you give comes back. Also, keeping yourself self-motivated, calm, fit, and disciplined is the key. If you are in a position to help someone, then please do it without any motive. 

8. Is there something you would like to say to Nwsppr?

AYUSH SABAT- Nwsppr will surely be becoming a big platform in the coming months with diversified content from different fields.
